Spring is said to be the season of new beginnings. It is a time of rejuvenation, renewal, and regrowth. It follows winter and precedes summer. Days begin to get longer, and weather gets warmer. The snow melts and plants begin to bloom. Many refer to Spring as the season of hope. In celebration of the season, our community is hosting an annual Spring event here in Membertou.
The 7th Annual Spring Gathering, “Wikipaltimk”, is taking place on Saturday, May 5th at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre, beginning at 12:00pm.
The afternoon will include refreshments, dancing, storytelling, and drumming. This year, our Spring Gathering is in collaboration with the Isle of Story Festival. The best part about this free event is that EVERYONE is welcome. We want to see folks from all over Cape Breton Island and beyond! After all, we are always #WelcomingTheWorld to our community.
Isle of Story Festival
The Isle of Story Festival is a celebration of storytelling that highlights the past, present, and future of storytelling in Cape Breton. The five day festival will conclude after the Spring Gathering. What a great way to end a festival!
History of the Spring Gathering
In 2011, an elder of our community suggested that we make an attempt to revive Mi’kmaq ceremonies. It was then decided that Membertou should host a spring gathering. “Wi’kipaltimk” means to honour each other. The purpose of the Spring Gathering is to honour each other and celebrate the spring season!
We hope to see you this Saturday, May 5th, at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre. The celebration begins at 12:00pm, but drop by at anytime during the afternoon to take part.
