Spring is the season of new beginnings. It is a time of rejuvenation, renewal, and regrowth. Days begin to get longer, and weather gets warmer. The snow melts and plants begin to bloom. Many refer to Spring as the season of hope. In celebration of the season, our community is hosting our annual Spring Gathering event here in Membertou.
The 7th Annual Spring Gathering, “Wikipaltimk”, is taking place on Saturday, May 5th, 2018 at the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre, beginning at 12:00pm. We encourage everyone to attend!
The afternoon will include refreshments, dancing, storytelling, and drumming. This year, our Spring Gathering is in collaboration with the Isle of Story Festival. The best part about this free event is that EVERYONE is welcome. We want to see folks from all over Cape Breton Island and beyond! After all, we are always #WelcomingTheWorld to our community.
Isle of Story Festival
As we mentioned, our Spring Gathering for this year is in collaboration with the Isle of Story Festival. The Isle of Story Festival is a celebration of storytelling that highlights the past, present, and future of storytelling in Cape Breton. The five day festival will conclude after the Spring Gathering. What a great way to end a festival!
How it Started
This year marks the 7th annual Spring Gathering in our community. Each year it is something to look forward to.
It began back in 2011, when an elder in our community suggested that we start reviving more Mi’kmaq ceremonies. It was then decided that Membertou should host a spring gathering. The name”Wi’kipaltimk” was chosen for this gathering, and it means to honour each other. The purpose of the Spring Gathering is to honour each other and celebrate the spring season!
